Catalina State Park
Since 2006
Everyone Runs has been so fortunate to bring runners and walkers to the magnificent beauty and vistas at our Catalina State Park Trail Races. Each race features a combination of the multiple park trails. In April, you’ll take on the Nature, Canyon Loop, and Birding Trails. In September, we move over to 50-Year Trail and Nature Trail. Then in November, we bring you our Veterans Day half marathon, 5.3 miler, and 5k road run and walk, using all the aforementioned trails. Check out our course maps that are available on our home page to get a view of the trails traveled at each race.
The Trails of Catalina State Park
Before embarking on your run, be sure to check trail conditions and any park advisories
This relatively easy 2.3-mile loop begins at the park’s trailhead, at the end of the main road, and is perfect for a quick run or walk. It provides stunning views of the Catalina Mountains and showcases the diverse plants, massive Saguaros, and Ocotillos of the Sonoran Desert.
Canyon Loop Trail
For those seeking a longer hike or run, the Sutherland Trail is a very nice option. This out-and-back begins on the Canyon Loop Trail and then after about .7 miles intersects with the start of the Sutherland Trail. You’ll know that you’re at the end of the easier first section when you encounter a gate. If you’re looking for a more difficult run or hike, you can go past the gate. Log-in to All Trails to make sure you know the route past the gate, especially since it’s more rugged.
Sutherland Trail
If you're looking for a leisurely run with educational opportunities, the Nature Trail is an excellent choice. This easy .75-mile loop features interpretive signs highlighting the park's natural and cultural history, making it a great option for families or those interested in learning more about the area. Don’t let the big hill at the start scare you off! It’s short and then flattens out for the remainder of the hike.
Nature Trail
While primarily known for birdwatching, the Birding Trail also serves as a pleasant route for a relaxed run or walk. This one-mile loop winds through mesquite groves and along the banks of a seasonal stream, offering birdwatchers and runners a tranquil escape into nature. During late winter and early spring, you’ll experience an abundance of wildflowers on the upper ridge.
Birding Trail
Bridal begins behind the park’s main parking lot at the end of the main road and is an easy and flat one that is great for walker, runners, and horses. The surface is smooth and easy to navigate to the beginning of the much more difficult 50-Year Trail.
Bridal Trail
This one is a favorite among runners for its moderate difficulty and scenic beauty. It's a 6.1-mile round trip that takes you through a lush canyon with intermittent stream crossings and ends at a picturesque waterfall (seasonal). There is a lot of sun exposure on Romero, so be sure to wear a hat, lather up the sunscreen, and bring a lot of water.
Romero Canyon Trail
This trail, along with Romero Canyon, is the most difficult within the park’s trail system. It’s a 5.9-mile out-and-back to the gate that leads out of Catalina State Park and the first part is almost entirely uphill. Hiking or trail running shoes are a must. Look out for horses and mountain bikers and bring plenty of water. The trail is almost always exposed to the sun. Keep your head up - the views of the Catalina Mountains are magnificent!
